Rae: Before we dive in please share with readers how the Small Town Spice Girls began and how this has impacted and/or changed your writing.
Delta: Some of the best things in life start with lunch.
A handful of us crossed paths at a small local event—one of those casual, low-key affairs where you’re just happy if they have coffee. But something clicked. We recognized a certain spark in each other: the kind of creative ambition and stubborn work ethic that either means you’re going to build something great together or end up in a true crime podcast. Fortunately for everyone, we chose option A.
It wasn’t long before we banded together with a wild idea—what if we wrote a new kind of anthology? Not a collection of loosely connected stories, but a set of complete novellas woven together into a single novel that told one story from beginning to end. Every author bringing her own voice, her own characters, but all of it building toward something bigger.
What came out of LOVE, LIES AND CELTIC KNOTS was more than a wonderful read (though it absolutely is that). It was a tribe. The Small Town Spice Girls were born—and we haven’t shut up since.
Annie: The Small-Town Spice Girls came together completely by accident and is proof that sometimes the best things happen when you least expect them—and I’m so glad they did. The four of us attended a local signing where none of us really knew anyone, but somehow we all found our way to each other. What started as casual conversations turned into lunch, and then hours of talking like we’d been friends for years.
A few weeks later, one of us had the idea to create The Small-Town Spice Girls, and from there, things just took off. We thought it would be fun to write an interconnected anthology together (because clearly none of us had enough on our plates already), and that’s how Love, Lies, and Celtic Knots was born.
Since then, these women have become far more than author friends. We support each other through deadlines, launches, life events, and everything in between. What started as a random meeting at a signing turned into one of the best friendships of my author career, and I wouldn’t change a thing.
CA: Banding with the Small Town Spice Girls has changed my life in so many ways! I had been searching for my tribe for a while. I have a lot of author friends all over the place, but was having trouble finding my people– fellow small town steamy writers, authors with similar career goals, similar marketing and business collaboration needs and goals, and bonus, if we were all located in close proximity, we could have an in-person relationship rather than only a virtual one. One day, I found them at an event featuring south Florida indie authors. Each of us brings something unique to the table, while all having common goals. We all live within a two-hour radius, so we can even meet for lunch. And double bonus–we like each other. What started as a business relationship has also become a friendship. With the anthology, we created our own fictional small town in Florida, Pelican Point. Since the collaborative anthology, we’ve gone on to release 11 individual stories with no plans to stop. And, we’ve now opened up our Pelican Point world to other authors.
Irene: The Small-Town Spice Girls came into my life at exactly the right time. I just didn’t realize it at the time.
We met at a small author signing in 2024, and at the time, we were all navigating the same challenges that come with this career—isolation, building readerships, juggling deadlines, and figuring out the business side of this industry. What started as a few conversations between authors who understood the unique ups and downs of this business quickly turned into genuine friendship.
Before long, Connie suggested creating an author group together and The Small-Town Spice Girls was born. What began as a fun collaboration has grown into something much bigger. We’ve written books together, shared readers, supported each other’s careers, and cheered each other on through countless launches and milestones.
The truth is, writing can be a lonely profession. Having a group of women who understand exactly what this journey looks like has been one of the greatest gifts of my author career. What started as a chance meeting at a signing became a partnership that has lasted for years, and I can’t imagine this journey without them.

Rae: What genre(s) do you write and what are you currently working on?
Delta: I write contemporary, military and paranormal romantic suspense, thus the tag line for my logo: Romantic Suspense With a Twist. I always have a number of projects on my calendar at any one time. My last completed book is SHADOWED THREAT (the fourth book in the Shadow Strike) and I’m working on the first book in the new series, Edge of Control, POWER PLAY
Annie: I write romantic comedy and contemporary romance with a little bit of everything mixed in—small-town charm, romantic suspense, laugh-out-loud moments, and enough emotional damage to make the happy ending feel earned. Right now, I’m working on several projects at once because apparently, I looked at a perfectly reasonable to-do list and thought, “Needs more chaos.”
CA: Like my fellow spice girls, I write small town steamy romance. We each have our niches and mine is interracial, later-in-life, opposites attract, and second chance romance. I’m currently working on several multi-author collaborations and starting a new small town series set in North Carolina.
Irene: I write contemporary romance with subgenres in paranormal (think ghosts, psychics, and curses) and western romances. My current projects are my Cowboys of Wildflower Valley series and my dark cowboy series co-write with Delta James, Bourbon & Blood.
Rae: What is your favorite decade?
Delta: Probably the current one we’re living in. I am a big believer that everything we go through compounds together to make us who we are. So, if you like that person and where you are, embrace all of it. If you don’t like who or where you are in your life, change it! And, if you think it’s too late for you, don’t believe it. Afterall, I didn’t start writing until I hit 60!
Annie: The 1980s. We had amazing music, questionable fashion choices, and parents who had absolutely no idea where their children were for most of the day. It was a magical time.
CA: I would say the roaring twenties! I love history, and there was a lot happening then. The music, the clothes, and the emerging power of women in society.
Irene: Favorite decade was the 80’s. The music was unparalleled, the hair was big, and fashion was bold. It was free in a way kids today don’t understand, with no internet, cell phones, or social media. We lived in the moment.
Rae: What five things do you have to pack when attending a conference?
Delta: My BFF and assistant, Chris—trust me, without her, nothing happens. My laptop. Diet Coke. My banner and swag, and of course, the books!
Annie:
- A phone charger and backup battery pack. Nothing causes panic faster than watching your battery drop below 10%.
- My laptop (because inspiration never respects business hours).
- A notebook for all the brilliant ideas I swear I’ll remember but won’t.
- Snacks (I’m a Type 1 Diabetic… I go nowhere without snacks).
- Comfortable shoes—because author events are basically endurance sports.
CA: My notebook computer, my calendar, all kinds of swag, my phone, and my shamrock lights! And I’ll add one more, a sweater or hoodie because I’m always cold!
Irene: extra sharpies, BOOKS, stickers and bracelets to trade, chargers, and my ride-or-die: The Hubs!
Rae: What is your snack attack must haves in your day bag?
Delta: Diet Coke, protein bars, cucumber spear and hummus, Chris’s grilled chicken.
Annie: Chocolate. More chocolate. A protein bar so I can pretend I’m making healthy choices. Diet Mountain Dew. And whatever random snack I bought at the airport because I was convinced I’d be stranded for days.
CA: Always diet coke and some type of chocolate, typically m&m’s or 3 musketeers. Also, tea bags and splenda or equal.
Irene: coffee – and lots of it, nuts and fruit.
Rae: What’s the one thing you forget to pack and swear to remember next time?
Delta: Actually, I’m lucky as Chris is the one who gets us and the car packed… and Chris has lists! That means we rarely find we don’t have everything we need!
Annie: A sweater. Every conference hotel seems to believe attendees should experience the authentic conditions of the Arctic Circle. Every year I freeze. Every year I’m surprised. Every year I forget the sweater again.
CA: Ibuprofin in case I get a headache!
Irene: I usually forget to pack my comfortable shoes, a spare pair of contacts, and my reading glasses. Every time… LOL
Thank you so much authors! If you are an attending author or industry professional and you want to join in on the fun please e-mail me and we’ll be sure to add you on a future post!
I’ll be keeping a running list and will post a master packing list a week before #SaSS26 Richmond. I’ll see you soon for new authors and more ideas!

Delta James is a USA Today bestselling author of steamy romantic suspense and paranormal romance. Known for her fast-paced, heart-racing, panty-melting stories, Delta writes fierce heroines, dominant heroes, dangerous secrets, and irresistible fated mates. From alpha shifters prowling the wild to powerful billionaires ruling the boardroom, her books deliver heat, suspense, and unforgettable chemistry.
Delta never planned to write romance. In fact, she launched her author career in 2018 after deciding her second act in life needed a little more passion… and possibly a little more bite. Since then, she’s published dozens of addictive romances for readers who love their happily-ever-afters with plenty of steam and danger.
She lives in Florida with her pack of loyal basset hounds (who firmly believe they run the household), and when she’s not writing steamy scenes or plotting revenge for her latest heroine, she can usually be found riding horses, walking the beach, or chasing her next adventure on the river.

Annie Carlisle writes small-town romance with heart, humor, and just enough heat to keep things interesting. Her books are filled with strong heroines, swoon-worthy heroes, loyal dogs, quirky towns, and happily-ever-afters that feel like coming home.
A former paramedic and married to a retired law enforcement officer, Annie has seen her fair share of real-life drama. These days, she’d much rather create it on the page. When she’s not writing, she’s usually spending time with her husband, spoiling her dogs, attending book signings, or adding yet another story idea to the list she swears she’ll get to someday.
Whether she’s taking readers to a cozy beach town or a snowy Alaskan mountain community, Annie’s goal is always the same: leave readers smiling, laughing, and believing in happily-ever-after.

CA Miconi writes small town steamy romance with just the right amount of sweetness. She and her retired military hero hubby, Gary, got married on a beach in Key West on St. Patrick’s Day 2010 and now reside in Fort Myers, FL, after building a life together in Baltimore, MD.
When she’s not reading, writing, or working with other authors, CA enjoys traveling, spending time with her daughter and grandchildren, golfing, and cheering on her beloved Baltimore Ravens and Florida Everblades.
If you like second chances, love after loss, opposites attract, later-in-life, or interracial romance stories, follow the shamrocks to CA Miconi.

I’m a contemporary romance author from many places, but currently living in South Florida. I fell in love with the romance genre in her teens and, once my daughters were grown and gone, finally took a stab at writing my own love stories. My ultimate goal is to create well-rounded romance novels that tug at the heart and leave you wanting more.
I’m a self-proclaimed coffeeholic and love Italian food and red wine. When I’m not writing, I’m usually on a walk with The Hubs, drinking coffee with a book in hand, or playing Hay Day.

Grab a cuppa and join Authors Gwen Parks, Blye Donovan, Angela Casella, and Nikki Davenport.

Rae: What genre(s) do you write and what are you currently working on?
Gwen: contemporary romance. Working on book 3 of my enemies to lovers trilogy. Book one released June, and Book 2 releases July 24.
Blye: I write romantic suspense and am currently working on book 2 in a military romantic suspense series. Plus, I’m launching a new pen name J.B. Donovan this summer with my first paranormal romance!
Angela: I write romantic comedies. I just finished up my Babes of Brewing series of interconnected romances, and my next series launches in September with Falling for Mr. October, a fall fake dating romcom about the internet-famous Shirtless Chef, who hides out at his childhood friend’s farm after his face is revealed on camera. There’s fake dating, fall festivities, and a romance book club at the retirement home where the heroine works (complete with the D0ng of Discussion, which they pass to the person who’s talking).
Right now I’m writing my Christmas book, Kissing Mr. Mistletoe, the follow-up to Mr. October, and also a super-secret project!
Nikki: I write steamy contemporary romance and romantic suspense. Think royal romance reimagined in an all-Black, Wakanda-meets-Bridgerton universe. My Crown & Heart series is perfect for readers who crave high-stakes passion and intrigue, where love isn’t the only thing at risk and every choice can change a kingdom.
Right now, I’m working on Healing Reign with fan-favorite second-in-command Cenn. Still rebuilding after loss, she finds herself fake dating a widowed ER doctor from a gloriously complicated family. She’s stubbornly self-reliant, but she’s no match for a man who’s determined to treasure her exactly as she is.
Rae: What is your favorite decade?
Gwen: I’m a millennial, so the 90’s have to be my fav.
Blye: I’m an 80s baby and a 90s kid. The 90s will always be my favorite. I mean . . . boy bands, no cellphones, and so many good movies and tv shows. Can’t beat it.
Angela: The 1980s. I MAY have convinced my daughter to choose the 1980s American Girl Doll, Courtney, because I was obsessed with all of her accessories. She has one of those transparent phones we were all obsessed with!
Nikki: Depends on the category!
Music? The ’80s.
Fashion? The ’60s.
Rae: What five things do you have to pack when attending a conference?
Gwen: My Banner, My books, and a good outfit.
Blye: Oh gosh, there are so many things, but five that I can think of off the top of my head are, 1. table decor because I love decorating my space, 2. books (because, yeah, lol), 3. a blazer—it’s kind of my signature “Blye” look for signings, 4. stickers because I’m kind of obsessed with them and have tons as
swag, and lastly . . . is it bad if I say Prosecco?
because usually it’s a girls trip and that’s a requirement, lol.
Angela:
Books. If I forget those, people will be mad at me.
Warm clothes – I’m basically a reptile, and I get cold in conference rooms.
Freebies – I love giving away bookmarks, stickers, and other fun stuff
My sister as my assistant – She’s way better at promoting me than I am
Lip gloss – I can’t go five seconds without it
Nikki:
-
-
Business cards and postcards
-
A mini rechargeable fan (because conference rooms have trust issues)
-
My pocket apron—it keeps all the important things within reach
-
My trusty Dr. Grip pen for signing books
Rae: What is your snack attack must haves in your day bag?
Gwen: Anything chocolate or a bottle of water.
Blye: I have Rheumatoid Arthritis and have to be careful with what I eat, but I’m obsessed with peanut butter. I eat it everyday. It’s my favorite snack, especially with an apple or some grapes.
Angela: PRETZEL GOLDFISH. They’re kind of disgusting, and I’m obsessed with them.
Nikki: Salty chocolate or sour gummy bears. When it comes to emergency provisions, my sweet tooth refuses to choose sides.
Rae: What’s the one thing you forget to pack and swear to remember next time?
Gwen: My business cards.
Blye: Throat lozenges. I forget how loud convention rooms can be and how much you can strain your voice talk
Angela: I always need to bring a sweater, because I get freezing in conference rooms no matter how warm it is outside. I also always promise myself I’m going to be more organized next time. (I am never more organized next time.)
Nikki: A second microfiber bath sheet. I always travel with my own, but I somehow never remember to pack a second one for the pool. Every trip, same conversation with myself.
Thank you so much authors! If you are an attending author or industry professional and you want to join in on the fun please e-mail me and we’ll be sure to add you on a future post!

Gwen Parks is a reader first and a writer second. She started reading young adult books during middle school and started writing during high school. Her first forms of work were poems and lyrics for songs, that are currently unpublished.
Barnes and Noble is considered her home away from home, and when she has the chance she visits as often as she can. She is fascinated in a world where couples can overcome the hardest of obstacles and the tragic hero sweeps his leading lady off her feet. What she enjoys the most is a good plot twist, which inspired her to start writing her own stories. Currently, her favorite books are We Were Once by S. L. Scott and Altercation by Mignon Mykel.
In her downtime, she relaxes at home with her family in Maryland, discovering new books and playing with her Pomeranian pup. Her biggest dream is to have a book signing to meet any fans of hers. Sleep is her favorite pastime because it always evades her when her mind is running a mile a minute with new book ideas.

Blye Donovan is a military brat and a veteran. She lives in the lowcountry of South Carolina with her wonderfully supportive husband, who doesn’t complain when she ignores him for hours on end, and their fluffy companion dog, who forces her to leave the writing cave for sunshine and fresh air. When she’s not feeding her addictions to peanut butter, coffee, or shoes, she writes pulse-pounding romantic suspense books. Her characters typically include alpha protectors and strong heroines overcoming dangerous villains, while finding love along the journey. Familiar tropes in her stories are forced proximity, woman on the run, and grumpy/sunshine.

ANGELA CASELLA is a romcom fanatic. Writing them, reading them, watching them—she’s greedy, and she does it all. In addition to her solo releases, she was lucky enough to collaborate with Denise Grover Swank on three complete series.
She lives in Asheville, NC. Her hobbies include herding her daughter toward less dangerous activities, trying to trick her corgis into behaving, the aforementioned
romcom addiction, and dreaming of a self-cleaning house.

Nikki Davenport writes contemporary romance and romantic suspense with Wakanda-meets-Bridgerton energy. Her Crown & Heart series unfolds in a lush, all-Black universe where queens are elected, the Elite Guard is fiercely protective, and love is never the only thing at stake.
Known for emotionally rich stories, high-stakes passion, and deeply loyal heroes, Nikki creates worlds centered on Black love, Black joy, and the bonds of family—both chosen and inherited. Her stories blend romance, intrigue, and unapologetic hope, with characters who fight fiercely for love and legacy.
A breast cancer survivor and dragon boat paddler, Nikki lives in Northern Virginia with her husband, a snarky teen, and two spoiled feline overlords. She is rarely without an audiobook, a podcast, or plans for her next happily ever after.

To kick off our series today in the cafe are authors Piper Stone, Sue Langford, Campbell Linden, and Britt DeLaney.

Rae: What genre(s) do you write and what are you currently working on?
Piper: I write in dark mafia, cowboys, alpha military men, contemporary billionaires, why choose romance, shifters, oil riggers, smokejumpers, and science fiction
Sue: Billionaire Spicy Romance. Working on the next book in my Ireland Series.
Campbell: I write later in life, second-chance contemporary romance. My characters are usually in their late 40s to mid-60s, have been widowed or divorced (although I occasionally have an avowed bachelor) and are seeking love and happiness at a later time in their lives.
Britt: I write Romance (Contemporary & Romantasy) as Britt DeLaney, and I’m also an award-winning YA author (L.E. DeLano). I’m currently working on a Rom-Com Beach read and a YA witchy re-telling of the Cinderella story.
Rae: What is your favorite decade?
Piper: I don’t think I have a favorite decade, just bits and pieces from them. Eighties music. The movies of two thousand.
Sue: Now. 80s was crazy fun, 90s was filled with clubs and meeting all the wrong guys. Now I’m in my me era……
Campbell: I write contemporary romance so my favorite decade is now. In terms of my characters’ ages, they are usually older and have older children, who are also fun to write about.
Britt: I love the 80’s! Big and brash and larger than life.
Rae: What five things do you have to pack when attending a conference?
Piper: Comfortable shoes – a must and one I learned the hard way. My purple pens – both ink gel and a sharpie for signing. Water – lots of bottled water. My laptop because I’m always writing even at a conference. My husband – as he’s my brilliantly talented assistant and creative arts director.
Sue: Comfy shoes, books, my AirPods for my audiobooks that I’m listening to, fuzzy socks for the overly cold toes and some snacks.
Campbell: This is my first conference and am sure I am going to forget many things. But I am planning to pack convenient, non-messy snacks, outfits that make me feel good and are comfortable, shoes that are stylish but practical and don’t hurt my feet, pens and a pad or notebook – I love to jot down observations – especially when I travel – and crosswords from the Sunday New York Times magazine (yes, I still get newspapers) that I save for trips.
Britt: Books (of course), fun swag, table decorations, colored pens, and some sort of festive bookish attire.
Rae: What is your snack attack must haves in your day bag?
Piper: White cheddar Cheezits, Peanut M & M’s for my husband, smoked almonds – the spicier the better.
Sue: I try for healthy snacks like kind bars, but have a secret craving for whole grain goldfish crackers……
Campbell: Popcorn and pretzels. I’m more of a savory than sweet person.
Britt: Diet Dr. Pepper and Biscoff cookies
Rae: What’s the one thing you forget to pack and swear to remember next time?
Piper: A light jacket or sweater just in case it gets too chilly.
Sue: Perfume or body spray. Somehow I always end up going to get it at a Sephora nearby.
Campbell: Phone charger(s)
Britt: Funny you should ask, but my last event I forgot to pack my pants and had to wear the very wrinkled yoga pants I traveled in. Ugh!
Thank you so much authors! If you are an attending author or industry professional and you want to join in on the fun please e-mail me and we’ll be sure to add you on a future post!

When Sue started her writing career, she was determined to write books with strong female characters, and stories that you wouldn’t ever forget. Now, after her Charleston Series and now her new Ireland series, she’s gone from sweet romances to the spicy and sultry end of the romance world. The second-chance and small-town romances can take place anywhere in the world, and she’s determined to write the stories from our favorite vacation locations, and a few of the locations from her dream bucket list. Now, her newest series takes place in the beautiful Isle of Ireland and will no doubt be the top of her favorites, and the spiciest that she’s ever written.
Campbell Linden began her career in advertising in New York City and went on to hold executive corporate communications positions in the entertainment industry before starting her own public relations consultancy. She is now recovering from a lifetime of meetings that could have been an email and has found her true calling in writing steamy romance novels.
When she’s not writing, she loves to sip coffee, share her favorite fashion finds and tell wild stories from her career.
She believes in happily ever afters in both life and books and is a proponent of showing others that you can reinvent yourself at any age.
