Welcome newbies and seasoned travel veterans to Authors Dish. With only thirteen days until Romance Writers of America 2019 I’m curious what authors and industry professionals always include in their suitcases, what they stash in their conference bag to avoid hunger pains and the things they forget once and hopefully never again.
While some of the authors contributing are not attending, we love they want to hang out and play. We hope their words of wisdom help to ease any anxiety you might have getting all the things in your suitcase.
May these posts inspire you to shop early, make your lists, and triple check so you are prepared for just about anything. If you’re heading to #RWA19 soon comment below so we can meet up in NYC.

Today in the cafe are USA Today Bestselling Author and 2019 RITA Finalist Tawna Fenske, USA Today Bestselling Author Robin Bielman and Author Lori Ann Bailey.
Rae: What five things do you have to pack when attending a conference?
Tawna Fenske:
- A mini electric skillet. Food is expensive at conferences, so being able to cook my own meals saves me a bundle. It fits neatly in my carry-on (I NEVER check luggage!), so all I have to do is find a nearby grocery store as soon as I arrive to stock up on things like eggs and fresh veggies.
- A Tide stain stick. I spill food CONSTANTLY, so this helps keep me stain-free.
- A cardigan. For some reason they air condition the conference rooms to sub-zero temps, so this keeps me from freezing.
- Comfy shoes. You spend a lot of time on your feet getting from place to place, so leave the toe-pinching heels at home.
- My HydroFlask reusable water bottle. I keep it in my purse and chug water all day to stay hydrated.
Robyn Bielman: A sweater (because I’m always cold inside the hotel and conference rooms), my laptop, comfortable shoes, a cute notepad for taking notes, and my glasses. 
1. I keep a spreadsheet of everything I need for conference. It’s super easy to print out and I update it as needed so I don’t have to start over each time I pack. Here are my top five must haves.
2. My twisty towel – shower towels are too big to wrap my hair in, plus if you have roommates, you don’t want to hog all them.
3. A water bottle – sure, you can take a cute one like a Swell, but a used plastic one works too. There is usually water provided at the back of meeting rooms where you can refill it. Trust me on this one – the last NY conference was my first and I was so desperate for a drink that I purchased the $6 bottle in the gift shop. I will never do that again.
4. Female sanitary items – even if it’s not “that time of the month” – I was so nervous at my first conference that my friend came to visit me early and I was not prepared.
5. Band-Aids – and keep them in the bag you have with you! – As you can see, my first conference was filled with rookie mistakes – the worst being that I wore uncomfortable shoes. They were so bad that the day of pitch appointments, my feet were bleeding, so I sat in the pitch room waiting for my time. I was so nervous I missed the appointment with the agent I wanted to pitch to even though I was sitting in the room waiting. Still shaking my head over that. But good news, I was able to pitch to her later and she is now my agent, despite my poor choice in footwear.
Which leaves me with probably the best thing to take with you – A positive attitude – sometimes things happen for a reason. (my manuscript was not where it should have been that first year) Please enjoy conference and make the most of your time there. Remember that all workshops are being recorded this year, so don’t stress if you can’t make it to everything. Have a great time enjoying your journey
Rae: What is your snack attack must haves in your day bag?
Tawna:
- Nuts, dried fruit, protein bars, jerky, and tons of water.
Robin: Usually some type of granola bar or small bag of almonds.
Lori Ann: Beef jerky, peanuts, trail mix, and breath mints.
Rae:What’s the one thing you forget to pack and swear to remember next time?
Tawna:
- Last year I forgot my eyeglass cleaning cloth, which is ridiculous for someone who wears glasses and constantly smudges them. Fortunately, there were a number of authors handing them out as schwag.
Robin Bielman: Hmm…I can’t think of anything I forget. Usually I overpack and bring way more than I need/wear!
Lori Ann: A corkscrew for opening wine bottles. 😉 Adding this to my spreadsheet now.

“Smooth,”I say with a shake of my head. He no doubt compliments every woman he meets. “But overused.” I put out my palm. “Hand over your phone. I’ll take the picture.”
He looks like he’s ready to yank the sling off his arm and throw it across the parking lot, but instead he gives in to my request. I put the card down on the hood of my car and snap the photo. After checking to make sure it’s a clear shot, I say, “Would you mind letting me know the cost of fixing your car before we go through insurance companies? I may pay out of pocket.”I hate the idea of depleting my savings account, but it might be the better option in the long run.
“Sure.” His fingers brush mine when I give him his phone back, and a surge of heat charges up my arm. Our eyes lock. Hold. “I should also get your digits then—” he glances down at the photo “—Chloe Conrad.”
His saying my name shouldn’t make me weak in the knees, but it does. We’re no longer strangers, not that he’ll remember me or give me any thought beyond fixing his car.
I snag the phone back and type in my number. Then I call myself. My phone rings from the car. “Now I’ve got your number, too.” I never answer my phone if I don’t know who’s calling.
“Would you like a name to go along with it?”
“That’s okay.” I hand back the phone.
His blue eyes dance. “You already know it.”
“Why would I know it? Are you famous or something?” I turn to go before he can see the truth on my face. “I’ll wait to hear from you and uh, sorry about hitting you. I don’t think I said that.”
“No worries.”
I wish. Life isn’t exactly going to plan at the moment. At least my next job assignment should be easy. My boss said it was a perfect fit and I’d get the details on Monday.
“Oh, and Chloe?”
I pause before sliding into my car and look at Finn.
“Nice try.” He tips his head toward my front bumper and winks. Actually winks! Normally I find winking cheesy, but not when Finn does it. His wink is like a calling card for let’s get naked and run our hands and mouths all over each other.
Then it hits me. My license plate frame. It says Baseball…The Perfect Game. S%^t. Can’t a girl catch a single break?
“See you around, Webster.”

Robin: Thanks so much for having me!
Rae: If we were meeting at a coffee shop I’d be drinking a peppermint mocha latte with Coconut Milk. What would you order?
Robin: That sounds yummy! I’d have a peppermint vanilla latte with either almond or coconut milk. 🙂
Rae: Happy Birthday – I brought cake today in honor of your birthday! It’s never too early for sweets!
Robin: Aw, I love cake! You are absolutely right – it’s never too early for sweets. Thanks for celebrating my b-day with me a day early. 😀
Rae: For those who are not familiar with your work, your backlist includes 16 books/novellas, that’s a lot of book adventures! If a reader is new to you, what book would you recommend the start with first?
Robin: It’s crazy when I think about how many books I have out! For readers who like sweeter romances, I would recommend Kissing the Maid of Honor and for those who like higher levels of heat, Keeping Mr. Right Now or Talk British to Me are good places to start.
Rae: You write of loving the outdoors and experiencing wicked adventures, what was the most terrifying thing you’ve done that you’d repeat? I read that you’ve skydived, parasailed, and even scuba dived, were they a one-time thing or do you regularly head out for an adrenaline rush? Have any of those adventures ended up in a book?
Robin: I’d love to do these things more regularly! I’ve only skydived once, but really want to again. It was a tandem dive so I was connected to an instructor and not scared at all. I couldn’t wait to write a heroine who skydives after that, and so there’s a skydiving scene in Falling For Her Bachelor. 🙂 There are lots more adventures I’d like to take for sure.
Rae: I must confess, I am a HUGE fan of your Wherever You Go series, can you give us a tease at the next installment?
Robin: Thank you! I’m so happy you’ve enjoyed the series. The next book is releasing April 16th and is Elliot and Madison’s story. As far as a tease goes, hmm… let’s just say neither is who the other expected. 😀
Rae: When you are writing a book, do you plot it out page by page, chapter by chapter? Or, do your characters guide you? How do you stay organized with your characters in a large series so that you don’t forget the little details?
Robin: My characters guide me and I love it! To stay organized, I always write with a notebook beside me that I keep handwritten notes in about character and plots so I can refer back to it as I write – especially books in the same series.
Rae: Are you a planner girl, a digital calendar fan, or do you have your own unique system that keeps your organized and on task with every aspect of your life :)?
Robin: I used to be so organized! Not so much anymore. LOL So, let’s say I have my own unique system that somehow works. I only occasionally screw things up.
Rae: Do you have a favorite place to write, or can you write anywhere? Do you find it easier to craft on a computer or with paper and pen?
Robin: My favorite place to write is at my desk where it’s nice and quiet. I’m not one of those people who can write anywhere, and I do almost all of my writing on my computer, but do take notes in a notebook.
Rae: What advise could you give to someone who is reading this and feeling inspired to write?
Robin: Do it! Write what makes you happy and whatever story or thoughts are in your head and heart. Enjoy the process and always believe in yourself.
Rae: What can we expect to see on the bookshelves in the upcoming months?
Robin: As mentioned, the third book in my Wherever You Go Series is releasing in April, and then I’m excited to share that I’m co-writing a book with the awesome and talented Samanthe Beck that will be releasing this summer.
Rae: If readers want to meet you in person where will you be?
Robin: I don’t have any plans to do any signings, but I will be at the RWA conference in Denver, and I always love to meet up with/run in to readers. Let me know if you’re going to be there!

1. What is a must read book and why? Anything by Colleen Hoover because her words are amazing.
2. What is one place that I should see if I visit your hometown? The ocean.
3. Do you take-in or cook? If so, what is your “go-to” dish? Both! For go-to meals we love pizza, Chinese food, and sandwiches.
4. What is one thing readers would be surprised to know about you? I swear a lot.
5. Hard Rock or Classical? Favorite Band or Artist? I’m more of a pop, electronic girl.
6. If you had an all expenses paid trip anywhere in the world for research, where would you go? Europe! (England, France, and Italy please.)
7. What is your guilty pleasure? Watching TV

10. Organized or Free Floating? I’m a laid-back, mostly organized girl. 🙂
11. Binge watcher or weekly viewer? Which show(s)? Both – current faves are Lucifer, Good Behavior, and Lethal Weapon, and I’ll binge watch shows on Netflix and movies on the Hallmark Channel.
12. What’s on your playlist? It’s been forever since I’ve updated it, but recent favorites are Ed Sheeran, Taylor Swift, Charlie Puth, and Maroon 5.
13. What play or musical do you want to see next? Hamilton
14. Are you a crafter? Not really. When my boys were little, I did some scrapbooking and made them sports memory books, but that’s the extent of it.
15. What’s your favorite TV show and why? I’ve got lots of favorites – when it’s on, Dancing With The Stars always makes me smiley. 😀
16. If you could pick a book you’ve read and make it into a movie, which book would it be (besides yours 🙂 )? Ack! I don’t know.
17. What’s your favorite movie of all time and why? Again, lots of favorites, mostly romantic comedies.
18. Would you rather see a movie in the theater or at home on DVD and why? It depends on my mood! It’s fun to go out, but it’s also fun to stay home in my PJ’s and get cozy with my hubby on the couch.
19. What is the one thing you can’t live without? My family
20. If you could invite 5 people to dinner (not friends and family – that’s too easy) who would be at your table? Where would you eat? Barack Obama, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, Reese Witherspoon, and Louise Bay. We’d eat at a casual burger joint.
21. If you could try any career for a day, what would it be? Anesthesiologist – I always say in my next life I’m going to be a doctor.
22. Person you admire and why? My mom for her strength, amazing kindness, and overall awesomeness.
23. What are your top five locations on your bucket? Paris, the Amalfi Coast, Costa Rica, Ireland, Fiji.

Tyler Hendrix is on a quest that didn’t include Ellie Sanders,and after their initial encounter, he won’t be able to remember the reasons why he shouldn’t get involved with her ;). The scene they first meet is hilarious and laugh out loud funny. Tawna is a master at one-liners that leave you begging for a screen adaption of her books!
Ellie doesn’t need a man to keep her satisfied thanks to her job and Tyler is desperate to be with her but fights his desires. Is he worthy of a long-term relationship. YES!!! They will both need to overcome a fear of commitment or risk loosing the best thing they have ever found.
