If you’re heading to New York City July 24-27, 2019 for RWA2019 or another conference reminders and tips are always helpful. Especially when it comes to packing, and as a first timer commuting to the hotel each day I am hoping I remember to pack all the things in one suitcase ;).
Hopefully you won’t find yourself waking up in the middle of the night panicked that you now need the very thing you forgot to pack. Or, finding out moments before you have a meeting or fun place to go, you ran out of or forgot something essential.
So, to all the newbies, and seasoned travel veterans, I’m running an Authors Dish specifically targeted on what authors and industry professionals always include in their suitcases, what they stash in their conference bag to avoid hunger pains and the things they forget once and hopefully never again. While some of the authors contributing are not attending we love that they want to contribute.
May this inspire you to plan, make your lists, and triple check so you are prepared for just about anything. If you’re heading to RWA2019 I’d love to say hi. Comment below so we can be sure to meet up in NYC.
Stay tuned as we’ll have plenty of tips and tricks in the upcoming weeks so check the blog daily.
Today in the cafe are USA Today Bestselling Author Naima Simone, Author Nancy Northcott and Author Gail Z. Martin/ Morgan Brice
Rae: What five things do you have to pack when attending a conference?
Naima Simone: Let’s see… I can’t forget swag, books if I’m bringing my own, my phone for notes and pictures, a “book signing” outfit (one that will have my waist appear snatched in pictures. LOL!) and great lipstick.
Nancy Northcott:
Comfortable shoes
Casual clothes
Legal pad or notebook
Umbrella
Charging cords
Gail Z. Martin/Morgan Brice:
Bookmarks/swag, my iPad so I can write in the room, blingy jewelry and sparkly jackets, at least one Supernatural t-shirt, and my travel power bar so I can plug in everything that needs to be recharged!
Rae: What is your snack attack must haves in your day bag?
Naima Simone: Actually, I don’t snack during conferences! I’m usually way too nervous and excited, so I don’t have an appetite at all. But for dinner? That’s a different situation all together. 😀
Nancy:
100-calorie packs of mixed walnuts and almonds
Toastchee orange (color, not flavor) peanut butter crackers
Kashi cherry & dark chocolate bars
Gail/Morgan: I bring peanut butter crackers or protein bars for a quick breakfast in the room or pick-me-up in the afternoon, a refillable water bottle, a couple of cans sugar-free Red Bull, and if I don’t have to fly, a flask of good whiskey or a bottle of wine!
Rae:What’s the one thing you forget to pack and swear to remember next time?
Naima Simone: Toothpaste or deodorant. I never fail to forget to pack one of them and always have to stop by the Dollar Tree wherever I’m going. LOL!
Nancy: Pens! Luckily there’s often a selection in the goodie room.
Gail / Morgan: Usually make-up wipes! I never seem to remember to replenish my stash.
Rae: Thank you so much authors! I’ll be keeping a running list and will post it a week before RWA2019 so that hopefully no one needs to make a quick run to the lobby market or drug store around the corner. I’ll see you soon for new authors and more ideas!

Naima Simone: USA Today Bestselling author Naima Simone’s love of romance was first stirred by Johanna Lindsey and Sandra Brown many years ago. Well not that many. She is only eighteen…ish. Though her first attempt at a romance novel starring Ralph Tresvant from New Edition never saw the light of day, her love of romance, reading and writing has endured. Published since 2009, she spends her days—and nights— writing sizzling romances with a touch of humor and snark.
She is wife to Superman, or his non-Kryptonian, less bullet proof equivalent, and mother to the most awesome kids ever. They all live in perfect, sometimes domestically-challenged bliss in the southern United States.
Nancy Northcott: Nancy Northcott’s childhood ambition was to grow up and become Wonder Woman. Around fourth grade, she realized it was too late to acquire Amazon genes, but she still loved comic books, mysteries, science fiction, fantasy, history, and romance. A sucker for fast action and wrenching emotion, Nancy combines the romance and high stakes (and sometimes the magic) she loves in the books she writes.
She’s the author of the Light Mage Wars/Protectors paranormal romances, the Lethal Webs and Arachnid Files romantic suspense series, and the historical fantasy trilogy, The Boar King’s Honor. With author Jeanne Adams, she co-writes the Outcast Station space opera series.

Gail Z. Martin/Morgan Brice:
Morgan Brice is the romance pen name of bestselling author Gail Z. Martin. Morgan writes urban fantasy male/male paranormal romance, with plenty of action, adventure and supernatural thrills to go with the happily ever after. Gail writes epic fantasy and urban fantasy, and together with co-author hubby Larry N. Martin, steampunk and comedic horror, all of which have less romance, more explosions. Characters from her Gail books make frequent appearances in secondary roles in her Morgan books, and vice versa.
On the rare occasions Morgan isn’t writing, she’s either reading, cooking, or spoiling two very pampered dogs.
Series include Witchbane, Badlands, and Treasure Trail. Watch for more in these series, plus new series coming soon!

Today in the cafe are NY Times and USA Today Bestselling Author Samantha Chase, USA Today Bestselling Author Christi Barth, and Author MK Meredith.
Rae: What five things do you have to pack when attending a conference?
Samantha Chase: My laptop, my Kindle, way more clothes than I will ever wear, Zzzquil (to help me sleep), and my travel fan.
Christi Barth:
5 things:
- I’m an overpacker extraordinaire (#noregrets) so I bring medicine for everything – you never know what will hit mid-con! Paranoid? Maybe. Super useful to either me or a friend-in-need? You bet!
- I always bring both a kindle and a paperback (in case the kindle breaks) because sometimes you have a 7 minute break and just need to read.
- A water bottle – it is too easy to not hydrate sufficiently. And the tiny cups in panel rooms are worthless. Bring your own bottle and refill in every workshop!
- A Tide Stick – again, either useful for you or a friend.
- A notebook – really, the clacking of keys on laptops is disrupting and rude to everyone else in a workshop. Go old school – stick to paper and pen!
MK Meredith: business cards, marketing materials, lip balm/gloss, phone charger, jacket or sweater to layer.
Rae: What is your snack attack must haves in your day bag?
Samantha: Lindt dark chocolate (70% cacao) and Coca Cola
Christi: Besides the aforementioned water bottle? Nuts/dried fruit. Easy to fill ziploc and have all week.
MK Meredith: PEANUT BUTTER!!!
Rae:What’s the one thing you forget to pack and swear to remember next time?
Samantha: I’m ashamed to say I never forget. I start packing a week in advance, make a list, check it twice (or fourteen). I usually overpack because I prepare for any and all situations! Yeah, I’m a dork like that.
Christi: Nothing – and here’s why – I have an Excel spreadsheet packing list. My friends mock me mercilessly about it, but everything is on it, and I just print a fresh one for every trip.
MK: Cash.
Rae: Thank you so much authors! I’ll be keeping a running list and will post it a week before RWA2019 so that hopefully no one needs to make a quick run to the lobby market or drug store around the corner. I’ll see you soon for new authors and more ideas!

Samantha Chase: Samantha Chase is a New York Times and USA Today bestseller of contemporary romance. She released her debut novel in 2011 and currently has more than forty titles under her belt! When she’s not working on a new story, she spends her time reading romances, playing way too many games of Scrabble or Solitaire on Facebook, wearing a tiara while playing with her sassy pug Maylene…oh, and spending time with her husband of 28 years and their two sons in North Carolina.
Christi Barth: USA TODAY bestselling author Christi Barth earned a Masters degree in vocal performance and embarked upon a career on the stage. A love of romance then drew her to wedding planning. Ultimately she succumbed to her lifelong love of books and now writes award-winning contemporary romance, including the Naked Men and Aisle Bound series.
Christi can always be found either whipping up gourmet meals (for fun, honest!) or with her nose in a book. She lives in Maryland with the best husband in the world.
MK Meredith: MK Meredith writes single title contemporary romance novels which promise an emotional ride on heated sheets. A member of several writing groups, she believes the best route to success is to never stop learning.
She’s had a lifelong love affair with peanut butter — the only two things coming close in the battle for her affections are gorgeous heels, and maybe Gerard Butler…or was it David Gandy? Who is she kidding? Her true loves are her husband and two children who have survived her SEA’s (spontaneous explosions of affection) and live to tell the tale.
MK’s been reading romance long before she should have and can’t think of anything better than to fill her life with the promise of happily-ever-afters. When people ask, “Why romance?” She replies, “There is nothing more exhilarating than to write about one of the most powerful entities on earth. Love can be the fall of kingdoms and move mountains, destroy lives and create new life, inspire the dark and summon the light. Love is a challenge, a hope, and a miracle all wrapped into one. Love is life. I write about life.”
The Meredith’s live in the D.C. area with their two large fur babies…until the next adventure calls.

Lynne: Not to jinx myself, but I’m a pretty good packer. I usually mean to bring my RWA badge holder from year to year, and do forget that some years.

Tessa McFionn:
Tessa McFionn is a very native Californian and has called Southern California home for most of her life, growing up in San Diego and attending college in Northern California and Orange County, only to return to San Diego to work as a teacher. Insatiably curious and imaginative, she loves to learn and discover, making her wicked knowledge of trivial facts an unwelcomed guest at many Trivial Pursuit boards.
Her love of the fantastical began at a young age while her mother read to her and her brother such classics as The Hobbit and Rikki Tikki Tavi. She continued this love, devouring Terry Brooks, J.R.R. Tolkien, Ray Bradbury, and Isaac Asimov as well as comic books galore. Romance entered the field in the guise of Anne Rice’s An Interview with a Vampire, and during college, she discovered the works of Sherrilyn Kenyon and Christine Feehan, and the rest is history.
Her first novel, Spirit Fall, came to her as she looked over the edge of a very dark place. Since then, she’s added three more tales to the world of the Guardian Warriors and Spirit Bound, Book Two in the series, was awarded the 2016 Write Touch award for Paranormal Romance from WisRWA. But she never lost her love for science fiction and began a space opera, The Rise of the Stria, in March 2018 with the release of To Discover a Divine.
When not writing, she can be found at the movies or at Disneyland with her husband, as well as family, friends or anyone who wants to play at the Happiest Place on Earth. She also finds her artistic soul fed through her passions for theatre, dance and music. A proud parent of far too many high school seniors and two still living house plants, she also enjoys hockey, reading and playing Words with Friends to keep her vocabulary sharp. She is currently the President of the San Diego chapter of Romance Writers of America and loves spending time working with such amazingly intelligent and creative writers.

Today in the cafe are USA Today Bestselling Author Heather Long, Harper Kincaid, and Lucy Farago
Rae: What five things do you have to pack when attending a conference?
Heather: My ipad, charging cables, atomizer for the room, a notepad, and water bottles (I drive to a lot of conferences so I bring a whole case with me)
Lucy Farago:
1. dress shoes
2. comfortable shoes
3. more shoes…kidding…well, not really but let’s change my answer to business casual wear.
4. formal wear for the Rita’s and evening wear for dinner out
5. casual clothes to be comfortable enough to see the city
Harper Kincaid:
1. Extra underwear.
Trust me. You’re going to sweat when you bump into your favorite author and you don’t want to be stuck in stinky panties the rest of the day.
2. Nuclear-powered breath mints.
Because nothing I say will be fabulous if I have breath that smells like ass.
3. Ear plugs.
In case your roommate snores. That would be me btw.
4. Bandaids and neosporin.
Because you’re going to want to wear the cute shoes and they’re going to fuck up your feet. Happy feet equals happy week.
5. Permission to take a break.
There’s a LOT going on at RWA and it’s understandable you want to do it all. I’m telling you right now, that’s not going to happen. So make priorities and make sure to take little breaks. Your psyche will thank you.
Rae: What is your snack attack must haves in your day bag?
Heather: Hmm…I try not to snack, but I do like to munch on nuts. Soy Wasabi Almonds are like my all time favorite.
Lucy: I usually bring a couple of power bars with me. I often forget to eat.
Harper Kincaid: Cashews and raw almonds. Portable protein, baby.
Rae:What’s the one thing you forget to pack and swear to remember next time?
Heather: I hate to admit this, I’ve forgotten my anti-perspirant/deodorant so many times, I just plan to buy one when I get there.
Lucy: I nearly always forget something stupid, like mascara, or deodorant, toothpaste, bandaids for, you guessed it, shoes. Guaranteed I am running to a drug store for something.
Harper: Ha! There’s always something. I usually forget something like an extra jacket or a scarf or an eye mask. Something I don’t always use but will feel vital while I’m away.
Rae: Thank you so much authors! I’ll be keeping a running list and will post it a week before RWA2019 so that hopefully no one needs to make a quick run to the lobby market or drug store around the corner. I’ll see you soon for new authors and more ideas!

Heather Long:
USA Today bestselling author, Heather Long, likes long walks in the park, science fiction, superheroes, Marines, and men who aren’t douche bags. Her books are filled with heroes and heroines tangled in romance as hot as Texas summertime.
From paranormal historical westerns to contemporary military romance, Heather might switch genres, but one thing is true in all of her stories—her characters drive the books. When she’s not wrangling her menagerie of animals, she devotes her time to family and friends she considers family.
She believes if you like your heroes so real you could lick the grit off their chest, and your heroines so likable, you’re sure you’ve been friends with women just like them, you’ll enjoy her worlds as much as she does.
Heather is best known for her 18-book and growing paranormal romance series Wolves of Willow Bend, which begins:
Prequel: Wolf at Law
1: Wolf Bite
2: Caged Wolf
3: Wolf Claim
3.5: Wolf Next Door
4: Rogue Wolf
5: Bayou Wolf
6: Untamed Wolf
Heather’s other fantasy romance series include the paranormal westerns Fevered Hearts starting with Marshal of Hel Dorado, Black Hill Wolves which start with What a Wolf Wants, and the Bravo Team WOLF series.
Her contemporary romance series include: Always a Marine, Going Royal, Elite Warriors, The Love Thieves, beginning with Catch Me, and Lone Star Leathernecks, beginning with Semper Fi Cowboy.
Heather is well-represented in fantasy with her superhero series Boomers, a sci-fi western called Space Cowboy Survival Guide, an urban fantasy series called the Chance Monroe Adventures, and a stand-alone ghost novel, Haunt Me.
Lucy Farago: http://lucyfarago.com/news/meet-lucy/
Harper Kincaid: Born in California and raised in South Florida, Harper Kincaid has moved around like a gypsy with a bounty on her head ever since. For years, she was a jill of all trades and a master of none, but is now tickled hot pink to pen stories that break and mend people’s hearts for a living. Kincaid believes seduction occurs from the neck up, which is why her characters are smart, sexy, and slightly quirky – and definitely worthy to be your next hard-core book crush.
When not writing, she adores listening to indie, lo-fi, complaint rock played on vinyl, the theater, well-informed optimism, happy endings (both kinds), and making those close to her laugh ’til they snort. She is a self-admitted change junkie, loving new experiences and places, but has now happily settled in the cutest lil’ town, Vienna, Virginia.
