When his door flew open and he stepped out, she knew sheโd made a mistake.

Never in her wildest dreams did she imagine that this mystery guy was the same guy sheโd slept with and ran out on just days ago.
โWhy wouldnโt it be? I have crappy luck. Of course theyโd be the same guy,โ she mumbled.
For some reason, she was more comfortable following a stranger up here than running into Walker. And he looked like some sort of sexy, rugged, outdoorsy model.

There was nowhere to go, nowhere to hide. All she could do was put the car in park and sit there gripping the steering wheel as he stared at her for so long that she started to squirm.
He took one step toward her and then another, and it was like a predator stalking his prey. His dark hair was slightly mussed. There was enough stubble on his jaw to tell her he hadnโt shaved in a day or two. Sunglasses hid his eyes, but she already knew they were dark and hypnotic. He was scowling and she swallowed hard as he came to a stop right beside her window.

Slowly, she let the window down and did her best to smile, even though her heart was racing so hard she wanted to vomit.
โUmโฆhi!โ she blurted out. โI was justโฆโ
โYouโd better turn this car around right now,โ he said, his voice low and gruff and fairly intimidating. โWhatever it is you think youโre here for, forget it. Now leave before I call the cops and have you arrested for trespassing.โ
โTechnically, weโre on a public road right now. The property line starts at the gates, so Iโm not trespassing.โ
He leaned down menacingly and nearly growled the word, โLeave.โ
But now she was in too deep and refused to be bullied. โIโm not going anywhere until you give me fifteen minutes of your time.โ
โI believe I already gave you that and more on Friday night.โ

โFinding out he was cheating almost felt like relief. Like I finally had an excuse strong enough to leave without the guilt.โ
A wave of shame burns through me, but Reid squeezes my hand, warm and steady. โYou have nothing to be ashamed of. You were surviving.โ
โYouโre free now, Lara.โ
I nod, breathing through the tightness in my chest.
A small smile plays on his lips. โRemember when survival was just trying not to get dunked off a surfboard?โ
I snort. โOr trying not to get caught when we snuck in after curfew.โ
โPretty sure our parents knew,โ he says, mock serious.
โYeah, we werenโt that sneaky,โ I reply, grinning.
We lapse into easy laughter, the tension finally breaking, and for a moment, itโs like weโre fifteen again, sprawled on the beach after hours in the waves, the world no bigger than the stretch of coastline between our houses.
The moment fades into a warm, quiet hush. I glance over and find him watching meโhis expression relaxed but his eyes carrying something deeper.ย
Not just fondness. Memory.ย
Maybe even regret.ย
My heart stutters, just once, because I know this feeling. The way the air stills between two people who know thereโs more under the surface. Weโve been circling it all day. All night. And now, itโs right there. Unspoken and waiting.

Reidโs expression tightens, just for a moment.
