Author Info:
Bestselling author Barbara Devlin was born a storyteller. A Texan, through and through, Barbara hasn’t been without a book in her possession since she was in kindergarten. She wrote her first short story, a really cheesy murder-mystery, in high school, but it was a Christmas gift, a lovely little diary with a bronze lock, given to her in the fifth grade that truly inspired her love of writing.
After completing part of her undergraduate studies at the University of London, where she developed a love of all things British, Barbara returned home and began a career in banking. But the late 80s weren’t too promising for the financial industry, and every bank that hired Barbara soon folded. So she searched for a stable occupation, and the local police department offered the answer to her prayers.
Initially, Barbara wasn’t too sure about her new career in law enforcement, but she soon came to love being a police officer. And then one uncharacteristically cold and icy day in December 1998, Barbara was struck by a car and pinned against a guardrail while working an accident on a major highway. Permanently disabled, she retired from the police department and devoted her time and energy to physical therapy.
Once Barbara got back on her feet, she focused on a new career in academia. She earned an MA in English and continued a course of study for a Doctorate in Literature and Rhetoric. She happily considered herself an exceedingly eccentric English professor, until success in Indie publishing lured her into writing, full-time, featuring her fictional knighthood, the Brethren of the Coast.
My husband and I took our two children (ages 20 and 17) on a cruise to celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary. The two stops were Cozumel and Grand Cayman. The weather was rainy and the water was very rough for most of the trip. Only one day was it nice enough to be on deck. Chairs were at a premium that day!
Thanks for a great contest opportunity.
Hi Rae and Barbara! Ooh this sounds fabulous – who can resist a pirate? (Although I have a soft spot for the Knights Templar too!) I’ve been on lots of boat trips, from ferries in the Med, sailing between various Greek Islands, to an Alaskan cruise, to a rum sail in the Caribbean! I love water – it speaks to me, so love to while away time on the water.
Oh! Pirates! Actually, everything looks good! Boats and me don’t get along so good. I once went out on a Navy supply ship when they were have a day cruise for all the sailor’s family’s. I spent most of the time standing on the open deck, chugging chocolate milk, and praying I wouldn’t actually toss my cookies. LOL! Horrible for a daughter of a sailor to be so prone to seasickness!
Well, you had me at pirates. 🙂 Of course, that could be partially because I recently discovered the show Black Sails and totally binge watched it. I’m also a big fan of the Pirates of the Caribbean — the movies and the ride at Disney World. 🙂
I’ve got to admit that I’m not overly fond of boats myself, at least not ones where there is a lot of wave action, because I can’t swim and I have a tendency to get queasy. I’ve ridden the ferry to Ellis Island and a little ferry near where I grew up in Kentucky that crossed the Ohio River over to Illinois. The coolest boat trip I took though was when I was a magazine writer and I spent a day and night on the Mississippi Queen as it sailed along the Cumberland River from Dover, Tenn., to Nashville. They had a library on board and I picked a book to read and sat on my little balcony and watched the landscape go by and read. That night, I watched A Beautiful Mind in their little movie theater and had dinner in the dining room. It was a lot of fun. I will say that every time I watched Downton Abbey and saw those commercials for river cruises through Europe, it really made me want to do that. My aunt and uncle did and really enjoyed it.
Hi, Barbara! How cool to find a new series — I have a secret weak spot for laughing pirates, for sure! I’m so glad to have found your stories.
I’ve really only been on one boat trip in my life: When I was a teenager, I was lucky enough to take a three-day trip on a small yacht along Florida’s Intracoastal Waterway with a bunch of my girlfriends. We went from Jupiter Inlet down the coast a ways, and then back again. Lovely.
Hi Barbara! Man, you’ve lived an interesting life! I’ve been on a cruise ship. Does that count? We took a cruise for our 30th wedding anniversary and went to the Cayman Islands, Honduras, Belize, and Mexico. While in Belize, we took a boat trip up the New Belize River – so two boat trips in one. LOL. Your books look fantastic!
We took our honeymoon on a Maine schooner 30 years ago.
That sounds so romantic!
