Exclusive Excerpt 300x300 Dirty Exes by Rachel Van Dyken Review, Exclusive Excerpt, and Giveaway

This was not how I pictured my life going.

Not even a little bit.

A rat scurried by.

I held my breath and closed my eyes.

The smell of sewer burned my nostrils and made me cringe when I thought about how much money I’d spent on my LuLuLemon yoga pants. Yeah, these stains weren’t coming out any time soon.

I was the adult version of Dora the Explorer crawling through the sewers of downtown LA like I was searching for fabled alligators.

When I was a little girl I wanted to be a princess, so like I said, not how I pictured my life.

I tried to stop myself from gagging as something that looked like dirty toilet paper floated past. I grunted and kept stumbling through the dark tunnel.

I hadn’t been close to my parents.

Their deaths left this giant gaping hole in my heart where I knew something was supposed to fit, but nothing ever did. My brother poured himself into sports—and I poured myself into this idyllic little fantasy that I would be the mom I never had.

It seemed like a good idea. Marry well. Be the mom I’d been denied. The mom I’d always wanted. One who’d make casseroles on Mondays, pot roast on Sundays, have a white picket fence—that was the dream. Or maybe the dream was just to be loved.

The sound of cars above me had me panicking, one earthquake and I’d go splat beneath a semi hauling fish.

Because that was the type of luck I had.

I checked the text message again and used the flashlight on my phone to peer up at the ladder leading to the street.

Isla: Downtown. Eleven p.m. Shaggy’s Steakhouse. Alleyway

“Bingo,” I whispered and quickly plugged in my fiber-optic camera. God bless iPhones and all the little gadgets that come with them. As quietly as possible, I climbed the ladder and shoved the camera up through the gritty metal hole.

“Come to mama,” I whispered as my adrenaline spiked.

Isla said she’d lure him out of the restaurant with the promise of a quickie, and the cheating idiot—the one who really needed to learn how to shop in his own garage, if you get my meaning—was clearly all over it. What was it with men who thought that money made up for their overactive sweat glands and jowls the size of my a**?

“God, you’re a beautiful woman,” lying, cheating bastard crooned in a gravelly voice that reminded me of those antismoking commercials. My face twisted with disgust while I recorded. The angle was perfect, and the street lights may as well have been spotlights on his eager face.

“Awww.” My best friend and business partner shrugged a shoulder and forced a laugh. “You’re such a nice guy. How are you not married?”

“Just haven’t found the right woman, I suppose.” He toyed with the black material near her shoulder, flicking it with his swollen and heavily ringed pointer finger. I kept myself from throwing up.

“Is that so?” She leaned in. “How is that even possible?”

“No idea.” He leaned in.

Oh, honey, I appreciate the dedication but he probably tastes like an ashtray. Don’t do it, don’t do it. I briefly contemplated closing my eyes so I wouldn’t have to witness any forthcoming kiss. Only a best friend would notice the slight grimace Isla made before backing up and sliding a manila envelope out of her bag and shoving it into his chest.

“What’s this?” He chuckled at the envelope while she made a gagging noise and wiped her mouth. The guy hadn’t even kissed her, yet her body was in distress, poor thing.

“You got it?” She looked down at the sewer cover.

I moved the fiber-optic cable up and down in an affirmative motion.

She smirked at him. “You’ve just been served. You’re also on camera, so say hi to your wife and the rest of the Dirty Exes, our live Facebook group. And while you’re at it, you may as well say goodbye to half of everything you own according to the prenup you signed three years ago. But you know what? Half doesn’t seem nearly enough to put up with you.”

I cackled.

His phone buzzed.

“Better answer that, I’m pretty sure that’s your soon-to-be-ex-wife just making sure you’re aware that she saw the live video.” She smiled triumphantly. “Oh, and nice doing business with you.”

With great effort, I removed the sewer lid then heaved myself up the rest of the way. The cover felt like it weighed twenty-five pounds, and I nearly smashed my fingers in the name of catching another cheater. I’d do it again in a heartbeat.

“You smell.” Isla scrunched up her nose when she waltzed over to me. “But you’re dedicated, I like it.”

“It was the only way to get close enough,” I grumbled and made an effort to dust off my damp clothes even though I knew it was in vain. When she’d texted she’d be meeting the target, I’d been headed back to my apartment, so I was ill prepared for sewer sightseeing even though I knew it was a possibility, considering the location. Can one ever be completely prepared to do something like that? The answer is no. Just. No.

“You b*****s!” The Cheater ran toward both of us—lips curled in disgust, his eyes beady, angry little lasers, hand raised—like he was seconds away from attacking us with his cell phone.

Instinctively, I reared back and let my fist fly. Knuckles connected with flesh, and he whimpered and went down like the loser he was.

“Blaire!” Isla groaned. “You can’t just punch our clients’ husbands.”

“I slipped,” I lied. “Besides, it was self-defense! He’s twice my size and he made a threat!”

Isla just shook her head at me.

“He charged us! With his phone! That’s not normal behavior, plus it looked like he intended to use it as a weapon.”

I may have anger issues.

“Who are you people?” Cheater was on the ground, covering his face with his hands. Oh hell, was he crying?

I stepped over his sad, pathetic body and grinned. “The Exes.”

Isla looped her arm through mine and then dropped our black-and-white calling card on the ground. It was our final punch to the gut. Not only did it serve to warn our targets that we were watching … always watching, future clients who randomly found our cards called us based on curiosity alone. We grew our social media presence by being selective and only taking high-profile clients. Business was booming.

“Have a good night.” I waved and shoved my phone back in my pocket.

Isla sucked in a breath. “So, pizza?”

“Fries,” I countered.

“Pizza.” She narrowed her eyes like she was thinking.

“Wine,” we said in unison.

“Oh, looky here.” She pulled a bottle out of her giant Mary Poppins purse and waved it in front of my face like it was totally legal to drink while walking down the street.

“You have glasses in there too?” I laughed, poking my head in her giant bag.

She was already pulling them out.

Of course.

Always prepared, Isla was.

“And a screw top.” I pointed. “Best date of my life.”

“Isn’t it though?”

A couple passed us by. As I watched them kiss, I ignored the pang in my heart.

Just like I ignored the longing that came with it.

Stupid heart.

“You’re happy, right?” Isla asked. She was my other half. If the other half oozed sexuality and confidence. Most days I was lucky I even put on mascara and remembered to wash my hair. I was so focused on retribution, on not focusing on the past, that I was barely staying sane. I wanted to be that woman, the one who told the world where to stick it—I just didn’t know how to do it without acknowledging all the parts of myself that were still broken, still hurting. Because that meant I had to actually admit it happened, it was real, and I was alone.

An impasse, that’s where I was at.

“Of course!” I said loudly, realizing she was waiting for my response, and like an idiot I was peering into my wine cup like it was a Magic 8 Ball that would give me all life’s secrets if I just stared hard enough. Her eyebrow arched, and I could tell she wasn’t convinced. I took a deep breath, forced a soft smile, and said it again. “I’m really, really happy.”

I just had to repeat it.

And then add in two reallys.

She gave me a confident nod and wrapped her arm around me. “Good.”

And that was it.

Except it wasn’t.

Because a part of me was still thinking about that couple, about the look in her eyes when he kissed her, and about the way it felt to be kissed.

A really good kiss.

One that stunned you into silence. One that stole your breath and made you swear that if you died in that minute, it would be okay. A kiss that made you believe that maybe, just maybe, the world wasn’t all bad.

That maybe love existed.

It was that kind of kiss.

And I realized in that moment, with a jarring sense of insecurity, that I’d only ever been kissed like that once in my entire life.

And it wasn’t my ex-husband who had done it.

EXCERPT

“Admit it, you were scared when you first saw me, but when you woke up, I was wearing the glasses. Your opinion changed. You thought I was smart. Most people trust someone they perceive as intelligent…and relatively harmless.”
“You mean nerdy. You wear glasses so people think you’re smart. Why is it you have to convince anyone of that?”
“I’ll admit I’m not a patient person. I don’t want to have to continually convince people I know what I’m doing. I…I did a lot of…convincing…when I was a kid. I won’t do it again. You asked who I was earlier. I’m a computer expert.”
Okay. “But not a normal techy.” Normal techies didn’t have underground hidey-holes. “So, what is it? Information officer for the military. Hacker for the CIA. What?” She’d feel a lot better if she knew he’d gone through some security clearance.
 “You watch too much TV.”
“I don’t watch any television. Except for The Bachelor, and that’s purely for business.” That was her story and she was sticking to it. “And who else but the government would fund a place like this?”
He sighed like a man not used to people questioning him. “I work for an agency that specializes in search and recover. Every team member has a role. I’m the computer guy. Mostly, our job is to find…things.”
“Judging from the hardware out there, I’d say they don’t hire you to find their missing pet.” Of that she was certain.
“No.”
“And isn’t it the police’s job to find…things?”
“Sometimes,” he said.
“You with the police?” How much could she trust him?
“You’re asking too many questions.”
“Put yourself in my shoes.”
He got up and went into the kitchen. “How about some food? All you had was soup, and I haven’t eaten since this morning.”
Why didn’t he want to answer her? “Avoiding my questions when you’re stuck with me for who knows how long isn’t going to work.”
“I’m not avoiding. I’m hungry.” He opened a cupboard and pulled out a large can. “Chili? It says right on the can, fit for kings.”
“Sure,” she said, more to stay agreeable than actually looking forward to canned chili. She joined him. “You don’t work with the police. Do you work against them?” Although even to herself that sounded like a stupid question,
because if he did—if what they did was illegal—he wouldn’t tell her.

PART-TIME LOVER Excerpt:

~Christian~

I stroll up the hilly yard toward my house, passing my brother, Erik, who stands close to the porch. “Did you scare them all away? Admit it—they cringed in terror, scary movie—style.”

I slash an arm through the air. “Whole boatload of them. Tears, shrieks of horror. Wailing.”

He cringes dramatically.

“Toss me a towel, will you? Or do you want to continue to admire your more fit and handsome younger brother?”

Erik scoffs and throws the towel over the porch railing, away from me.

I shrug. “I’ll just go inside, and you can check out my arse.”

“You can count on me never ever checking out your arse.”

I grab the handle on the sliding-glass door and head inside to one of my homes. You can’t beat a home on the water. But then, a flat in Paris is hard for me to say no to as well. Good thing I get to have both.

I grab the pair of boxer briefs I left on the couch and tug them on as Erik follows me inside.

“Seriously. How did it go?”

“Exceptionally well. I landed a date tonight.”

“Bastard. You’re not supposed to get dates when you flash the tourists, and especially not when your beloved brother is only in town with you for a few days.” Most of the time Erik’s in London, where we were raised.

“Jealous much?” I ask, heading for the fridge and pouring a glass of cold water.

Erik flexes a bicep, then another, posing like he’s Mr. Olympia. “I’ve scored plenty of dates with this fabulous physique. Just none lately.”

“That would be because you’re married, you tosser.”

He flashes a dimpled grin. He’s so ridiculously in love with his wife, it’s nearly disgusting. He could be the poster child for man-who-falls-arse-over-elbow-for-a-woman. That’s something I can’t say for all the men in my family.

“I’m like Grandfather, happy as a clam.”

I furrow my brow. “How does anyone know clams are happy? Is there a study on clam happiness? We all assume they’re rays of sunshine, but how do we know?”

He scratches his chin. “Good question.”

“I bet they aren’t happy at all. I bet they feel nothing. Is that what happiness should feel like? Nothing?”

He sighs. “Aren’t you philosophical today?”

“Maybe. It happens every now and then.” I take a drink of the water. “But what can you do? Sometimes deep thoughts stray into my brain, and I can’t help it.”

“Best to get them out of your head if you have a date tonight.”

“Perhaps she likes thinkers,” I suggest.

“So who is she? Did you exchange numbers on the dock? Or did you, I don’t know, play charades with your appendages swinging in the breeze?”

“Yes. I can do Morse code with my d$*k.”

“Such a useful skill,” he deadpans.

“We did it the old-fashioned way. Picked a spot to meet and a time.”

He raises his chin. “And why her? Of all the ladies on all the tours you’ve ever flashed, you haven’t asked one out before. Not that you’ve told me about anyway.”

I let my brain rewind to the petite brunette with the big sunglasses who ogled me unabashedly from the side of the boat. She was pretty, that much I could tell even from fifty feet away.

But pretty alone isn’t enough. Pretty is a dime a dozen. I’ve dated women who aren’t pretty, but are witty, clever, and keep me on my toes. I like those traits just as much. Perhaps more. But I’m not opposed to pretty either.

Obviously.

“She was bold. She called out bravo. She said it louder than anyone ever has.”

“So she knows how to read your Morse code.”

“She’s welcome to read Morse code on me anytime. Come to think of it, she can even treat me like I’m fruit at the market.”

Erik laughs. “In some countries, they don’t let you touch fruit at the market.”

I gesture to my body, from my chest down to my legs. “In the fine country of Christian Land, it’s highly encouraged for the bold brunettes to touch the fruit.”

Coffee With Author Geri Krotow

Coffee With Author Geri Krotow

Geri 200x300 Coffee With Author Geri KrotowRae: Welcome to the cafe Geri! Thank you for hanging out with me. First, if we were meeting at a coffee shop I’d be drinking an iced coffee with Coconut Milk. So happy to have the warmer weather here. What would you order?

Geri: Thanks for having me over, Rae! I’d order either an iced Early Grey latte or a cappuccino.

Rae: For those that are unfamiliar with your writing, you write romantic suspense, military romance and have a handful of standalone romances. Can you tell us a little bit about your backlist?

Geri: I started writing women’s fiction, which my first two books sold as to the Harlequin Everlasting line (I won the publisher’s contest for it in 2006, and thus began my published career). I truly think that all of my work is women’s fiction, with some of it definitely romantic suspense. While I write military characters and draw on my navy background for that, I think my stories are still more romance than military based.

Rae: Your prior career in the US Military is inspiring and fascinating. How does one transition from a career in the military to writing romance? Have any work situations or experiences found its way into your stories? What is the biggest challenge to keeping military representation true and “real” for readers to believe while still writing fiction?

Geri: I’ve always been a writer, so for me there wasn’t a transition with the writing mindset. What I found difficult was going from people immediately validating my career (Naval Officer) to asking “are you published yet?” As if what I was doing, pouring my heart onto the page, didn’t count until I made money for it. I learned that as long as I’m certain about what I’m doing, that’s all that matters.

Rae: I know that you have a passion for baking and knitting, is it easy to find time when writing? I imagine your house smells yummy from baked goods and your wardrobe must be fabulous from all your handmade items! What are your favorite savory or sweet dishes to bake?

Geri: Sadly the knitting can take a backseat when I’m under deadline, which is pretty much all the time. But I do try to knit if even for ten minutes, each day. It’s a way to unwind my plots in my mine, to engage in “free thought.”

I love baking, yes, and my most recent favorite was a vanilla pound cake for Easter. It didn’t last long—a reason to keep baking as a special treat. 🙂 Otherwise I won’t fit into my clothes!

Rae: In our last conversation you mentioned you were busy with a book deadline. Now that your book baby Fully Dressed is out for readers to enjoy, what are you working on?

%name Coffee With Author Geri KrotowFully Dressed BC 200x300 Coffee With Author Geri KrotowGeri: I am working on revisions for Bayou Vows, Book 3 in the Bayou Bachelors, and I’m getting ready to begin a new Silver Valley PD novel (book 7). I have 5 books out this year, most likely 5 next year, which makes for a very full writing schedule. I am so grateful for this!

Rae: When you sit down to write, do you write the old fashioned way or type away at the keyboard? Writing all the words is a challenge, do you have a writing ritual or secret location to get the work done?

Geri: I’m a HUGE fan of Stephen King, and he wrote a book On Writing in which he describes our work as…work. I don’t have anything special except to put my butt in the chair and get to it. My job is to put words on the page, everyday.  I write in my office, all over my house, on the back patio, in a coffee shop (my husband is a barista so sometimes I go work where he is, which is fun!). But no matter where, or when, I write. The words need to get done, deadlines must be met.

Rae: Are you the writer who has a notebook for all the words that flow while driving or do you dictate into your phone?

Geri: I have never dictated a book, ever. Speech-to-text software is popular and I’m not saying ‘never,’ but for now I’m happy with my keyboard and a screen.

Rae: How do you tackle plotting your series? Is it on a massive board, sheets of paper or just write as you go with a simple outline? A lot of authors use Pinterest and make awesome boards to tease readers, are you one of them?

Geri: Yes, I have Pinterest boards for each of my series but they’re for the reader more than me. I plot on paper and use my past books in a series to keep my series straight.

Rae: When you are not busy writing, you keep readers updated on social media, I need to thank you for sharing about Seth Meyers recent birth of his son. I’m so busy reading and writing that I sometimes miss the newsworthy posts that make me laugh. What are your favorite types of posts, pics, or tweets?

Geri: I’m so glad you liked that Seth Meyers video! I adored how unabashedly joyful he was about his newborn child, and how he clearly adores his wife. The vast majority of my social media posts are original, and my favorite platform is Instagram. When I share social media I try to keep it positive and uplifting whenever possible.

Rae: There has been a lot of chatter on social media about planning and organizing to stay focused and succeed in personal goals for 2018. How do you keep it all from spiraling out of orbit between the family life and writer life?  Are you a planner girl or digital calendar queen?

Geri: I have a ‘word’ each year, that usually shows up in November or December, and I focus on it throughout the year. While I use a calendar app, my go-to is a Levenger (or Arc system, Staples) planner with calendar. I’m not hyper on using it to perfection, but as a guide and gentle reminder. My deadlines are on my white board in my office, along with book releases and author events. As you can imagine, that whiteboard has very little empty space!

Rae: Where can readers find you in 2018?

Geri: Five more books, at least, to include Silver Valley PD books 7 and 8 from Harlequin Romantic Suspense, Bayou Bachelors book 3 from Kensington Lyrical Caress, and a new Colton book from Harlequin Romantic Suspense.

Rae: What can we expect in 2018? Do you have other projects in the works?

Geri: My agent is the BEST in the world and we are hard at work on a very special project I hope to be able to talk more about in 2019. Stay tuned!

Rae: Thank you for hanging out in the cafe today.

Geri: This has been so wonderful, Rae. Thank you again for opening your heart to my stories and my writing world!

I’d have Stephen King, Tracy Ellis Ross, the Pope, the Dalai Lama, Oprah. Because why not? I’d have them for tea, and have incredible homemade scones, fresh strawberries, homemade whipped cream. And I’d serve it in the Russian porcelain tea set I bought when we lived in Moscow.

21. If you could try any career for a day, what would it be? Lead singer in a rock band—or just a duet with Johnny Rzeznik and the Goo Goo Dolls. Did I mention I love the Goo Goo Dolls?

22. Person you admire and why? My husband. He’s humble and modest, two things I could use more of.

RL pt 1 tour header BNW%2B%25282%2529 The Red Ledger by Meredith Wild Blog Tour

The Red Ledger Part 1 is thrilling, full of adventure and has wicked crazy chemistry. It’s the perfect way to kick-off the holiday weekend. Grab a drink, sit out on your deck chair and dive in!

All good thrillers have complex characters that must unravel a mystery and figure out how to recover after a traumatic incident. Meredith created a world of characters with many layers and delve into amnesia, family secrets, and shady business deals that ultimately impact multiple players.

Who has the answers? Is it as simple as the book in Tristan’s possession, or can Isobel fill in the blanks regarding Tristan’s mysterious lost years. It’s time to find out who put the hit on Isobel and unlock Tristan’s past. Will Isabel and Tristan survive their ordeal?

I didn’t expect to be so captivated by this story and was relieved to have part 2 already in my e-reader. So many secrets in this must read book kept me from doing anything else. Yes, I proudly binged because I had to know, and I still need answers! Who can shed light on why Tristan is really in Isabel’s life now?

It’s time for an on-the-edge-of-your-seat romance full of thrilling moments, hot chemistry and tons of plot twists. Are you ready for an adventure?
