The Purest Hook (A Second Circle Tattoos Novel Book 3) by Scarlett Cole is gritty, sexy and emotionally raw. One quick note before diving into this review, Scarlett is a DOUBLE nominee for the 2016 RITA’s in Best First Book and Romantic Suspense categories. This was the first book that I read by Scarlett and now I’m quick to add her backlist to my e-reader.

Sarah-Jane “Pixie” Travers has worked hard to move beyond her troubled, terrifying and dangerous past. With the help of a few strangers her life and future have promise. If only she could allow herself a few pleasures, specifically Dred Zander, maybe then she’d feel normal.

Dred Zander, a reality star and musician has the hots for Pixie but she won’t let him in. Try as he might he’s relentless and won’t give up. In fact he uses every opportunity he can to woo her with his charm, but each time she rejects him. The banter between them is fresh, flirty and fun and adds a nice balance of comfort while the suspense in the story builds. It gives hope and we love to read about the possibility of hope!

Both have troubled pasts that fill us with rage. Each afraid of losing to a past beyond their control they avoid the truth. Will these two lost souls find salvation?

Can Pixie finally uncover the truth around that fateful night? Will Dread walk away when he learns the details? When the press uncovers secrets and the media attempts to harm any chance of happiness for Pixie and Dred it will take a leap of faith and trust to work through it.

Three Week Arrangement (Chase Brothers Book 3) by Sarah Balance is a romance story about overcoming loss and learning to love again. Sometimes a leap of faith or a little divine intervention is what you need to get back out into the world.

Rue Campbell has her life mapped out and her career sorted, too bad her family can’t accept her plans. When a childhood friend insists she accompany him to a work gala, she does what most women would do, stretch the truth. By declaring that she’s already acquired a date the story begins an adventure of the heart. Especially since her date hasn’t been with a woman in years.

Ethan Chase can’t let go of his deceased wife despite the fact that it’s been three years since she passed away. Kudos Sarah on making what could be an awkward first encounter hilarious and charming.

While Rue needs a date, Ethan could benefit from a little distraction. A woman to show his family that he can move on and get back into the world. What will Ethan do when he discovers that Rue is the first woman to move him and ignite dormant feelings? Will he allow himself to fall in love again or push her away before things heat up?

Both have a few obstacles to overcome and expectations to work through. Rue is focused on her internship and has not thought through her plan. When she discovers that Ethan is possibly the one will it be too late?

Once again, Sarah Balance delivers characters that are real, charming and part of a family you dream to be a part of. I’m so in love with the Chase brothers and the rest of the characters their paths cross.

While Sarah’s book can be read as a standalone, this sexy and emotional book is the third installment in a must read series. These characters are witty, creative and willing to go outside the box for love. The perfect recipe for this contemporary romance.

Winning Lord West is the third installment in the Dashing Widows Book series from Anna Campbell and once again this series just get better and better.  From the first sentence you know that you have unwrapped a treasure filled with empowerment, friendship and love!

Once again we are thrown into the world of strong women who have not let their situation get the best of them. A beautiful sexy story of two souls that have waited years to connect.

These Dashing Widows have embraced their new found freedom and decided that life should be lived and matters of the heart be explored.

Helena  Wade is finally at peace with being a widow and welcomes her fate, she no longer needs to marry for financial reasons. Ready to enjoy life, and all the experiences, including the possibility of taking a lover.

Vernon Grange, the distinguished Lord West has waited years to be with Helena. Now that the stars have finally aligned to bring them together, what will happen? Will Helena finally permit Lord West to woo her?

I can’t say enough how satisfied I am after finishing one of Anna’s books or novellas. Anna writes stories of strong women who despite their unfortunate predicament are determined to enjoy life with or  without a husband.

The journey the Dashing Widows have taken leads to a very brilliant conclusion, one I didn’t want to end. Every character is thought out, not only are they compelling, charming and witty but they tug at your heart long after the last page has been turned.

I was given this ARC by the author for a fair and honest review. If we are lucky dear readers perhaps there will be m look forward to the widow’s we’ve yet to discover and their journey too! Hopefully we won’t have to wait too long, I hear the next book will be out later this spring.

Decide for yourself with this excerpt:

Richmond Park, London, May 1820

Lord West made an effort to lighten the tone. “I arranged this picnic purely for the pleasure of seeing you flying across the grass on the back of a galloping horse.”

Oh, dear, that wasn’t what Helena wanted to hear. She’d imagined he’d put this party together to further his pursuit of Caro. Helena didn’t want West noticing her. For years, he’d been content to treat her as a distant acquaintance. “Really?”

“Yes, really. It’s been a fancy of mine since I saw you restricted to a trot in Hyde Park. The experience was most uncongenial for an observer. You looked like someone was strangling you. Slowly.”

She frowned, resenting that West made her the focus of his attention. And that his conclusions were so accurate. “Town isn’t the place to ride neck or nothing. I’ll soon be back at Cranham.”

West signaled to a groom. “Such a pity.”

“That I’m leaving London?”

“No, that you don’t want a good gallop, when I went to such trouble to bring you a suitable mount—and a suitable saddle.”

The groom led a pretty chestnut mare toward them. Helena immediately noted the gleaming sidesaddle. Her hand curled at her side as if it already held a crop. Despite her misgivings about the man offering the favor, she itched to throw herself onto the lovely horse. The groom passed the reins to West, bowed and left.

West’s smile was mocking. “If you deny me, I’ll think that you don’t like me.”

She ran a gentle hand down the Arab’s jaw and bit back a sigh of longing. The mare truly was a darling. “I don’t.”

That wasn’t completely true. Her feelings for West had always been more complex than mere antipathy. When they were children, he’d been her hero. Shreds of that fondness lingered, although she’d long ago recognized that he was cut from the same cloth as her depraved husband.

“Ouch.”

She studied West, as with unconvincing nonchalance, Silas wandered off in Caro’s direction. “You don’t believe me?”

West shrugged. “Explaining exactly what I believe requires more time and privacy than we now enjoy. Even if you insist on seeing me as the enemy, I hope you’ll still accept Artemis as a gift.”

“Gift?” Helena stared at him, appalled. “What on earth do you mean? I can’t take such an extravagant present. Have some sense, West.”

He stood unmoved by her refusal, tall and lean in his immaculate dark green coat and fawn breeches. “Nonetheless, she’s yours.”

“That’s…” Helena struggled to understand what lay behind this ridiculous and inappropriate gesture. West had been out in society all his adult life. He knew how the world would interpret his generosity.

His gaze remained unwavering on her face. “Yes.”

“Yes, what?” she snapped, although she had a sinking feeling she knew.

“Yes, it’s a declaration of intentions.”

Horror flooded her. She faltered back across the grass as if he’d made an unwelcome physical advance. “This isn’t funny.”

“I’m deadly serious.”

“Then you’re wasting your time.” She straightened and glared at him. Her mind worked a thousand miles an hour to make sense of this abrupt alteration in their dealings. “I was a rake’s wife. Be damned if I’ll be a rake’s mistress.”

Book Review: A Last Chance Christmas by NY Times Best Selling Author Vicki Lewis Thompson

cover52873 medium 190x300 Book Review: A Last Chance Christmas by NY Times Best Selling Author Vicki Lewis ThompsonA Last Chance Christmas (The Sons of Chance Series) by Vicki Lewis Thompson is a Harlequin Blaze book and a wonderful post-Thanksgiving treat! When Ben Radcliffe is contracted to make a saddle and deliver it to the Last Chance Ranch for a birthday present, it’s a big secret. Only a few people know the truth about why Ben is at the ranch and are determined to keep it hush-hush. No one is to know that the saddle is a gift for the 70 year old matriarch, Sarah Chance, so “all lips are sealed!”

When Molly Gallagher, Sarah’s niece and family genealogist discovers Ben he’s playing a rendition of Silent Night on his harmonica.  It sends a jolt to her insides and she immediately melts! Molly had decided to use the party to spend a little extra time at the ranch collecting genealogy information from the family. All work and no play make this an interesting encounter and suddenly a hunky distraction.

When a hot kiss ignites a sizzling connection it leaves Molly and Ben in a liquid pool of lusty goodness. It takes them both by surprise. Molly has never fallen so quickly for a man and a little voice suddenly whispers “what if?” When Ben discloses that he’s not planning to have kids will that derail what could be between them?  Ben is reluctant coming from a troubled and devastating past, but perhaps it’s more out of fear?

Ben was just in it for the moment, or was he? Could he consider something beyond a potential one night fling? Hopefully Molly won’t push Ben away when she discovers just how serious he is about not having children. Never faced with this situation before she doesn’t have much time to process it. Maybe it won’t matter? They both need to be honest with their feelings and true desires. If they’re going to figure this new connection out they definitely don’t want  to involve the rest of the family.

This wonderfully written story is filled with fantastic characters and is blazing hot! Nothing is more special than family and friends at the Last Chance Ranch. When you add a birthday party, the holiday season, and a blizzard, it makes a magical cocktail of sweet heat and cheer! If you are craving a great cowboy holiday story and can’t wait until December 1st, there is an immediate solution dear readers!

I received this ARC from the author for an honest review and absolutely love it!  I can’t wait for the next one!!! As I mentioned in a previous blog post I don’t rate any of my reviews on my blog. However, for this “Spicy Read” I will rate it for its spiciness that way you’ll know if this little gem is for you!

Rae: What genre(s) do you write and what are you currently working on?
Siera: I write books about hope, self-determination, and agency revealed through a growing bond of physical and emotional intimacy. Basically, romance with sex on the page, lol. Currently, I’m writing Book 3 in the Calvary Brothers romantic comedy series.
Laramie: I write small-town, blue collar romance.  Regular people with regular lives; dates in a pickup truck to watch the stars, bonfire nights with family, fishing and crabbing on the Bay.  There’s some angst with tones of mental health, but all have HEAs.  I’m currently working on book 6 in the Southern Maryland Songs series.
S.E.: I write romcom, contemporary romance, and romantic suspense. I’m currently working on a few projects, including two new short stories for anthologies that will be published in 2027.
K.C.: I write blue-collar Southern romances where the women are strong, the men are steady, and love shows up when it’s least expected. Right now, I’m working on a novel about what happens when a girl’s wine night and a little Facebook Dating experiment “just for kicks and giggles” turn into an unexpected romance.
Carey: I write Contemporary Romance, PNR, Romantic Suspense, and Rom-com. Currently, I’m working on Book 5 of my Nightshade series, Night Vengeance as well as planning out a new small town rom-com series with some suspense nuances.

Rae: What is your favorite decade?
Siera:
My favorite decade… of course, the one where I’m alive! But, the Motown sound of the 1970s, 80s rock n’ roll, and the classic hip hop with a message about everyday struggles of the 90s.

Laramie: Maybe the1970s hippie culture.  One of my characters (Joie in “Home”) is a wild child, free range, sunshine girl.
S. E.: The 90s! LOL – Does that show my age? Hehe. Mostly, I loved the music and pop culture of the 90s. So many good television shows and movies!
K.C.: I’m definitely a ’90s kind of girl. There’s just something about that era that feels like home. When it comes to writing, though, I love creating characters who are either in their New Adult/college years or navigating life, love, and second chances in their 30s and 40s.
Carey: Why choose one? When it comes to music and movies, I love the 80’s and 90’s.

Rae: What five things do you have to pack when attending a conference?
Siera: Full discourse, I have a “go bag”. There’s always a 6 foot surge protector with multiple USB-C ports, a portable battery pack, and my iPad Air on hand. And, because I travel too much and know what can go wrong, will; there’s a mini-roll of bathroom tissue, a disposable washcloth, and a tooth brush in the zipper pocket.

Laramie: 5 things I pack.  I tend to over pack for “just-in-case”.  I definitely bring my body pillow for hotel sleeping, a hand fan and a shawl (you never know who’s controlling the temperature of the signing room), Kindle (I always have a book handy to read), note cards, and stickers.
S. E.: That’s a great question. Books, swag, the credit card adapter for my phone, my pop-up banner, and plenty of pens.
K.C.: Cheez-Its, swag, a phone charger, a mechanical pencil (because I absolutely refuse to take notes with a pen), and books. Lots and lots of books.
Carey: Books, table setup, a new outfit for signing day, my laptop for impromptu writing sprints, and a workout outfit that I usually don’t end up using.

Rae: What is your snack attack must haves in your day bag?
Siera: Raisins! We have a love-hate relationship. My waistline hates the sugar, but my tastebuds surrender at the sight of their glistening, deep brown wrinkled bellies.
Laramie: snacks? mixed nuts and flavored water.
S.E.: This is mood dependent for me. I usually try to pretty something sweet and something salty, like chocolate and chips.
K.C.: Cheez-Its or saltines. I’m pretty basic when it comes to snacks.
Carey: Chocolate-covered almonds, grapes, sour candy, preferably Sour Patch Kids, and Old Fashioned BBQ Lays potato chips or buttery popcorn.

Rae: What’s the one thing you forget to pack and swear to remember next time?
Siera: I always FORGET to pack a sweater. My husband, literally, has to carry a back up jacket because I have a mental block when it relates to outwear.
Laramie: Forgotten item?  Well this is where the over packing comes in handy. I’m not sure I’ve forgotten anything yet.  I’m working on being a more efficient and just bringing the essentials
S.E.: The CORRECT credit card adapter! I once switched phones and forgot to pack the new credit card adapter for my new phone. I was super lucky that a fellow author had an extra adapter that fit my phone. So now I always double check that!
K.C.: Without fail, it’s usually either my phone charger or my portable backup charger. You’d think I’d have learned my lesson by now, but guess not.
Carey: A swimsuit. If I remember it, I never use it. If I forget it, I somehow end up sitting by a poolside.

Thank you so much authors! If you are an attending author or industry professional and you want to join in on the fun please e-mail me and we’ll be sure to add you on a future post!

I’ll be keeping a running list and will post a master packing list a week before #SaSS26 Richmond. I’ll see you soon for new authors and more ideas!

Rae: Before we dive in please share with readers how the Small Town Spice Girls began and how this has impacted and/or changed your writing.

Delta:
Some of the best things in life start with lunch.

A handful of us crossed paths at a small local event—one of those casual, low-key affairs where you’re just happy if they have coffee. But something clicked. We recognized a certain spark in each other: the kind of creative ambition and stubborn work ethic that either means you’re going to build something great together or end up in a true crime podcast. Fortunately for everyone, we chose option A.

It wasn’t long before we banded together with a wild idea—what if we wrote a new kind of anthology? Not a collection of loosely connected stories, but a set of complete novellas woven together into a single novel that told one story from beginning to end. Every author bringing her own voice, her own characters, but all of it building toward something bigger.

What came out of LOVE, LIES AND CELTIC KNOTS was more than a wonderful read (though it absolutely is that). It was a tribe. The Small Town Spice Girls were born—and we haven’t shut up since.

Annie: The Small-Town Spice Girls came together completely by accident and is proof that sometimes the best things happen when you least expect them—and I’m so glad they did. The four of us attended a local signing where none of us really knew anyone, but somehow we all found our way to each other. What started as casual conversations turned into lunch, and then hours of talking like we’d been friends for years.

A few weeks later, one of us had the idea to create The Small-Town Spice Girls, and from there, things just took off. We thought it would be fun to write an interconnected anthology together (because clearly none of us had enough on our plates already), and that’s how Love, Lies, and Celtic Knots was born.

Since then, these women have become far more than author friends. We support each other through deadlines, launches, life events, and everything in between. What started as a random meeting at a signing turned into one of the best friendships of my author career, and I wouldn’t change a thing.

CA: Banding with the Small Town Spice Girls has changed my life in so many ways! I had been searching for my tribe for a while. I have a lot of author friends all over the place, but was having trouble finding my people– fellow small town steamy writers, authors with similar career goals, similar marketing and business collaboration needs and goals, and bonus, if we were all located in close proximity, we could have an in-person relationship rather than only a virtual one. One day, I found them at an event featuring south Florida indie authors. Each of us brings something unique to the table, while all having common goals. We all live within a two-hour radius, so we can even meet for lunch. And double bonus–we like each other. What started as a business relationship has also become a friendship. With the anthology, we created our own fictional small town in Florida, Pelican Point. Since the collaborative anthology, we’ve gone on to release 11 individual stories with no plans to stop. And, we’ve now opened up our Pelican Point world to other authors.

Irene: The Small-Town Spice Girls came into my life at exactly the right time. I just didn’t realize it at the time.

We met at a small author signing in 2024, and at the time, we were all navigating the same challenges that come with this career—isolation, building readerships, juggling deadlines, and figuring out the business side of this industry. What started as a few conversations between authors who understood the unique ups and downs of this business quickly turned into genuine friendship.

Before long, Connie suggested creating an author group together and The Small-Town Spice Girls was born. What began as a fun collaboration has grown into something much bigger. We’ve written books together, shared readers, supported each other’s careers, and cheered each other on through countless launches and milestones.

The truth is, writing can be a lonely profession. Having a group of women who understand exactly what this journey looks like has been one of the greatest gifts of my author career. What started as a chance meeting at a signing became a partnership that has lasted for years, and I can’t imagine this journey without them.

Rae: What genre(s) do you write and what are you currently working on?

Delta: I write contemporary, military and paranormal romantic suspense, thus the tag line for my logo: Romantic Suspense With a Twist. I always have a number of projects on my calendar at any one time. My last completed book is SHADOWED THREAT (the fourth book in the Shadow Strike) and I’m working on the first book in the new series, Edge of Control, POWER PLAY
Annie: I write romantic comedy and contemporary romance with a little bit of everything mixed in—small-town charm, romantic suspense, laugh-out-loud moments, and enough emotional damage to make the happy ending feel earned. Right now, I’m working on several projects at once because apparently, I looked at a perfectly reasonable to-do list and thought, “Needs more chaos.”
CA: Like my fellow spice girls, I write small town steamy romance. We each have our niches and mine is interracial, later-in-life, opposites attract, and second chance romance. I’m currently working on several multi-author collaborations and starting a new small town series set in North Carolina.
Irene: I write contemporary romance with subgenres in paranormal (think ghosts, psychics, and curses) and western romances. My current projects are my Cowboys of Wildflower Valley series and my dark cowboy series co-write with Delta James, Bourbon & Blood.

Rae: What is your favorite decade?
Delta:
Probably the current one we’re living in. I am a big believer that everything we go through compounds together to make us who we are. So, if you like that person and where you are, embrace all of it. If you don’t like who or where you are in your life, change it! And, if you think it’s too late for you, don’t believe it.  Afterall, I didn’t start writing until I hit 60!
Annie: The 1980s. We had amazing music, questionable fashion choices, and parents who had absolutely no idea where their children were for most of the day. It was a magical time.
CA: I would say the roaring twenties! I love history, and there was a lot happening then. The music, the clothes, and the emerging power of women in society.
Irene: Favorite decade was the 80’s. The music was unparalleled, the hair was big, and fashion was bold. It was free in a way kids today don’t understand, with no internet, cell phones, or social media. We lived in the moment.

Rae: What five things do you have to pack when attending a conference?
Delta: My BFF and assistant, Chris—trust me, without her, nothing happens. My laptop. Diet Coke. My banner and swag, and of course, the books!
Annie:

  • A phone charger and backup battery pack. Nothing causes panic faster than watching your battery drop below 10%.
  • My laptop (because inspiration never respects business hours).
  • A notebook for all the brilliant ideas I swear I’ll remember but won’t.
  • Snacks (I’m a Type 1 Diabetic… I go nowhere without snacks).
  • Comfortable shoes—because author events are basically endurance sports.

CA: My notebook computer, my calendar, all kinds of swag, my phone, and my shamrock lights! And I’ll add one more, a sweater or hoodie because I’m always cold!
Irene: extra sharpies, BOOKS, stickers and bracelets to trade, chargers, and my ride-or-die: The Hubs! 32 Authors Dish SaSS26 Richmond: Small Town Spice Girls

Rae: What is your snack attack must haves in your day bag?
Delta: Diet Coke, protein bars, cucumber spear and hummus, Chris’s grilled chicken.
Annie: Chocolate. More chocolate. A protein bar so I can pretend I’m making healthy choices. Diet Mountain Dew. And whatever random snack I bought at the airport because I was convinced I’d be stranded for days.
CA: Always diet coke and some type of chocolate, typically m&m’s or 3 musketeers. Also, tea bags and splenda or equal.
Irene: coffee – and lots of it, nuts and fruit.

Rae: What’s the one thing you forget to pack and swear to remember next time?
Delta: Actually, I’m lucky as Chris is the one who gets us and the car packed… and Chris has lists! That means we rarely find we don’t have everything we need!
Annie: A sweater. Every conference hotel seems to believe attendees should experience the authentic conditions of the Arctic Circle. Every year I freeze. Every year I’m surprised. Every year I forget the sweater again.
CA: Ibuprofin in case I get a headache!
Irene: I usually forget to pack my comfortable shoes, a spare pair of contacts, and my reading glasses. Every time… LOL

Current Headshot 200x300 Authors Dish SaSS26 Richmond: Small Town Spice Girls

Delta James is a USA Today bestselling author of steamy romantic suspense and paranormal romance. Known for her fast-paced, heart-racing, panty-melting stories, Delta writes fierce heroines, dominant heroes, dangerous secrets, and irresistible fated mates. From alpha shifters prowling the wild to powerful billionaires ruling the boardroom, her books deliver heat, suspense, and unforgettable chemistry.

Delta never planned to write romance. In fact, she launched her author career in 2018 after deciding her second act in life needed a little more passion… and possibly a little more bite. Since then, she’s published dozens of addictive romances for readers who love their happily-ever-afters with plenty of steam and danger.

She lives in Florida with her pack of loyal basset hounds (who firmly believe they run the household), and when she’s not writing steamy scenes or plotting revenge for her latest heroine, she can usually be found riding horses, walking the beach, or chasing her next adventure on the river.

Annie Carlisle writes small-town romance with heart, humor, and just enough heat to keep things interesting. Her books are filled with strong heroines, swoon-worthy heroes, loyal dogs, quirky towns, and happily-ever-afters that feel like coming home.

A former paramedic and married to a retired law enforcement officer, Annie has seen her fair share of real-life drama. These days, she’d much rather create it on the page. When she’s not writing, she’s usually spending time with her husband, spoiling her dogs, attending book signings, or adding yet another story idea to the list she swears she’ll get to someday.

Whether she’s taking readers to a cozy beach town or a snowy Alaskan mountain community, Annie’s goal is always the same: leave readers smiling, laughing, and believing in happily-ever-after.

Irene Logo Compressed 300x218 Authors Dish SaSS26 Richmond: Small Town Spice Girls

I’m a contemporary romance author from many places, but currently living in South Florida. I fell in love with the romance genre in her teens and, once my daughters were grown and gone, finally took a stab at writing my own love stories. My ultimate goal is to create well-rounded romance novels that tug at the heart and leave you wanting more.

I’m a self-proclaimed coffeeholic and love Italian food and red wine. When I’m not writing, I’m usually on a walk with The Hubs, drinking coffee with a book in hand, or playing Hay Day.
